Explore the Therapy ↓Etymology
Janu: Sanskrit for "Knee joint"
Basti: Sanskrit for "To retain/hold"
A Deep Reservoir of Healing
Janu Basti is more than a massage. It is a targeted medicinal pooling technique where specialized warm oils are held in place to penetrate deep into the bone marrow and synovial membranes.
Commonly indicated for Osteoarthritis, ACL injuries, and chronic stiffness.

How Janu Basti combats the "Dryness" of Vata Dosha.
Synovial Refill
The herbal oils act as bio-identical lubricants, replenishing the fluid that prevents bone-on-bone friction.
Thermal Dilation
Warmth dilates local vessels, allowing toxins (Ama) to be flushed out and fresh nutrients to flow in.
Nervine Support
Specific herbs like Ashwagandha in the oil strengthen the nervous system and reduce pain signals.
The Treatment Steps
Phase I: Purva Karma
A thick ring is molded from Black Gram (Urad Dal) dough and placed around the knee. This creates a waterproof seal that ensures the medicinal oil doesn't escape, focusing the therapy entirely on the joint.
Phase II: Pradhana Karma
Warm medicated oil (Tailam) is gently poured into the reservoir. As it cools, the therapist replaces it with fresh warm oil to maintain a consistent healing temperature for approximately 35 minutes.
Phase III: Paschat Karma
The dough is removed and the area is gently massaged. This is usually followed by a localized steam treatment (Nadi Sweda) to open the pores and drive the oil deep into the bone tissues.
